Press Release

Statement by American Kurdish Advocates (AKA) on the Bombardment of Kurdish Neighborhoods in Aleppo

It is deeply unfortunate that American Kurdish Advocates (AKA) is issuing its first public statement in response to violence affecting civilians. However, the bombardment of Kurdish neighborhoods in Aleppo and the broader risks to peace and dialogue in Syria necessitate a clear and principled response.

AKA is a U.S. based nonprofit organization committed to civic engagement, public education, and advocacy within the framework of American democratic values. The organization seeks to contribute constructively to discussions around U.S. policy affecting Kurdish communities and to promote peaceful, inclusive political solutions.

In this context, AKA encourages Kurdish Americans to engage with their elected representatives and to express concern about the protection of civilians, respect for existing ceasefire and dialogue agreements, and the importance of diplomacy over escalation. Attacks on civilian areas undermine prospects for stability and reconciliation.

AKA further emphasizes the importance of respecting political agreements, including the March 10 understanding between Ahmad Al-Sharaa and Mazloum Abdi, and allowing negotiations the time and conditions necessary to succeed. Continued violence risks undermining international confidence and diplomatic engagement.

AKA calls for restraint, the rejection of hate speech, and a return to dialogue. Civilian protection and peaceful negotiation remain essential to any sustainable future.
