American Kurdish Advocates (AKA) expresses strong support for the recent statements issued by multiple branches of the United States government regarding the recent unfortunate developments in Syria. Taken together, these statements reflect a responsible approach aimed at preventing further escalation and addressing Syria’s deepening crisis through political and diplomatic means rather than renewed conflict.
AKA welcomes the remarks by Brad Cooper, Commander of U.S. Central Command, underscoring the importance of restraint, the protection of civilians and critical infrastructure, and the urgent need for all parties to return to negotiations in good faith. AKA agrees on with Commander Cooper on the necessity of a Syria at peace with itself and its neighbors speaks directly to the aspirations of Syrians who have endured years of violence, displacement, and instability.
We also commend Jim Risch, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, for his clear and principled condemnation of the desecration of the body of a Kurdish woman in Aleppo. Such acts constitute grave violations of human dignity and international norms and signal a dangerous erosion of accountability. The responsibility of Syria’s governing authorities and armed forces must be to protect the rights and safety of all citizens, without exception, and to ensure that those responsible for abuses are held to account.
Furthermore, AKA strongly supports the statement by Tom Barrack, U.S. Envoy to Syria, reaffirming the importance of the United States’ partnership with the Syrian Democratic Forces and recognizing their critical sacrifices in the fight against ISIS. His warning that renewed violence in Aleppo risks undermining hard-won progress, violating existing agreements, and inviting destabilizing external interference is both timely and essential. Respect for the March 10 agreement between the Syrian government and the SDF remains indispensable to maintaining stability and preventing a return to widespread conflict.
As an American Kurdish organization, AKA urges the United States government to sustain diplomatic engagement on Syria and to continue pressing the Syria’s Interim Government to remain committed to a political path rather than military confrontation. A renewed war would only result in further bloodshed, displacement, and suffering, and might risk the openness toward Syria.
Syria’s future must be shaped through dialogue, accountability, and inclusive political solutions, not through violence. Protecting civilians, preserving hard-won stability, and preventing another devastating chapter in Syria’s tragedy must remain the highest priorities.
